Make
your future yoursIn the emerging global society, the importance of English as an international language has come to be widely acknowledged. The Department of British and American Studies offers students intensive English-language classes to improve their command of English. In small classes, students undergo special training which is conducted only in English by native speakers and Japanese instructors competent in English. Classes are designed to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in balance. We utilize the latest audio-visual technology in the language labs and employ effective teaching methods to cultivate studentsf English skills as well as their critical thinking abilities. In addition to the English skills necessary to express themselves in international settings, we aim to broaden studentsf knowledge and intellect by providing classes in a wide range of fields of British and American studies such as history, politics, economics, foreign policy, literature, and culture as well as English linguistics and English language education. Students start to study the basics of those fields, then narrow their focuses by taking lectures and other classes on various subjects and later go on to deepen their chosen fields by participating in the specialized seminars and working on individualized study. Most of the professors in the British and American Studies Department have conducted research abroad, taken part in international academic conferences, published results of their research, and participated in research with foreign scholars. Also, many students have had experience in Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia in academic courses or language study. At present there are about ten students studying abroad. We have recently established an exchange program with Coe College in the United States and are continuing our efforts to arrange academic exchanges with other foreign universities. |
