Spain
is one of the most interesting countries in Europe and has a distinctive
history and culture. Its language, Spanish, is currently used by more than
three hundred million people in Spain and 21 Latin American countries representing
a wide variety of cultural and historical backgrounds. Spanish is an official
language in the United Nations and has been recognized as one of the most
important and fastest-growing languages in the world. At Aichi Prefectural
University, a relatively small number of students (40 in the day course
and 15 in evening courses per grade) are intensively studying Spanish listening,
speaking, reading, and writing in small classes with 14 full-time professors
including two native speakers. In addition, several visiting or part-time
professors specializing in Spanish and Latin American cultures offer a wide
variety of classes and assist students in many ways. This student/teacher
ratio (3.9: 1) shows that our department is one of the best departments
of Hispanic studies in Japan.
Beyond language study, students have opportunities to learn about societies
and cultures related to Spanish. Topics include linguistics, Portuguese,
Catalan, pre-Hispanic civilization, literature, history, politics, economics,
religions, ideologies, etc. in Spain and Latin America. Courses are taught
by qualified specialists with solid research records. Through seminars,
students study and research their topics individually or in groups using
new facilities on a new, large picturesque campus. This university also
has an exchange program with our sister university, Universidad de las Américas
en Puebla, in Cholula, a beautiful colonial town near Mexico City. The university
provides intensive and extensive international programs for Spanish-learners.
They also offer many courses in social sciences, natural sciences, engineering,
architecture, and arts. This allows beginners of Spanish from our university
to learn Spanish intensively with other international students from different
countries while living with native speakers. Advanced students may prefer
to attend Latin American culture and history classes in Spanish along with
Mexican students. In either case, we award students credit at our university.
We are ready to provide programs appropriate for you with sufficient resources
and a wide variety of facilities. Above all, the faculty is willing to help
you experience a full academic life. All of us wish prospective students
to join us with a strong will to enjoy learning about the Hispanic worlds!
