Aichi Humanities Renaissance
- Become a Discoverer of Tradition and a Leader in Cultural Creation in the Global Age

The Faculty of Japanese Studies is a comprehensive learning institution for the humanities. The Faculty aims to cultivate a deep understanding and broad knowledge of Japanese culture through language, history, literature, and society, to become a discoverer of traditions, and to open one's horizons to the world with an understanding of the diverse cultures that can be seen from these traditions. We nurture leaders of intellectual creativity who have acquired a perspective that connects people to people, people to society, and the world to Aichi.

Greetings from the Dean

The world of humanities and sociology considers the way people and society have come to be and looks ahead to where they will go. The depth of history, the three-dimensionality of society, the deepness of thought, the profundity of the mind, and the ability to verbalize this are the subjects of study. With Japan as its axis, the School of Japanese Studies is based in Aichi and looks out over the world. It is an area worthy of immersion in a university life full of ambition, anguish, and fulfillment. Students and faculty learn together through the multi-layered curriculum of both departments and through collaboration with other faculties, off-campus cultural facilities, and overseas partner universities. We nurture individuals who will acquire intellectual creativity and play an active role in the local and international communities.

Department of Japanese Language & Literature

Exploring and disseminating "Japanese Culture" from the perspectives of language, literature, and thought.

The Department of Japanese Language & Literature consists of three major fields: Japanese and Chinese literature, which covers a wide range of literature and thought from ancient to modern times and Japanese linguistics, which covers the structure of language and its historical and geographical changes. From the perspective of the language and literature that have existed during various periods and in various regions of Japan, the department explores the social, cultural, and regional framework in which we live as "Japan" as well as the nature of "Japanese" culture in the world.

In addition, students in this department will acquire specialized knowledge and skills in language, literature, and thought and cultivate broad perspectives, solid analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities through interdisciplinary studies in the humanities.

Department of Japanese History & Culture

What is "Japanese Historical and Social Culture?" Thinking about our world from multiple perspectives.

The Department of History & Culture studies Japanese history, culture, and society with historical and social culture as its two pillars. The Department of History and Culture aims to explore Japan from ancient times to the present through the methods of history, and to examine various aspects of modern society through the multifaceted methods of sociology, geography, and law, and at the same time to acquire the insight and practical skills to creatively look into the future of human history, culture, and society.

In the course, specific training and examination of documents, such as old documents, are conducted in the "Documentology" and "Document Exercise" sections. In "Methods of Document Research," fieldwork outside the classroom is also conducted. At the same time, students will study each area of historical and cultural studies professionally in relation to the discovery of issues of the times and society and future perspectives. In order to look ahead to the future of a globalized international society, it will become increasingly important to have a historical and sociocultural perspective that looks at the origin of the present. The study in this department will surely help you to become a transmitter of solid intellectual creativity based on a historical perspective.

The Department of History & Culture provides an irreplaceable period of support for those who will be able to contribute to the development of local culture in government, respond to the demands of industry and deal with rapidly changing international affairs, play a central role in the management of schools, museums, and other educational institutions and cultural facilities, and be active in the cultural industries, including publishing and mass media. We hope that you will make the most of your university life at the Department of History & Culture.
