4年間の学びの流れ - 1年次

英語科目はすべて英語でおこなわれます。「Communicative English I」では、ディスカッションなどに慣れ、「English Phonetics」では英語の発音について学び、「Grammar & Basic Writing」では英語の文法知識を身につけ、作文能力を養います。「Academic English I」では学術目的の英語の習得を目指します。

各分野の「概論」、「基礎演習 I」及び学部共通基礎科目では、大学での学び方や、英語圏の社会や文学・文化、英語という言語の特徴などに関する基礎知識を身につけます。

英米学科は英語だけをひたすら勉強しているように思われがちですが、決してそんなことはありません。だからといって、英語を勉強したい人が志望するのをやめる必要もありません。英米学科では日常の英語に加えて、英国、米国の歴史や文化、さらには国際言語としての英語など、本当に様々な分野のことを学べます。難しくて面倒に聞こえるかもしれませんが、1年生のうちの授業は基礎から学ぶ分かりやすいものばかりで、高校は理系だった僕でも楽しく理解できています。また、不思議なもので、高校の時と異なり、勉強することが苦痛だとか、面倒だと思うことが少なくなります。周りの人間全員が英語に興味を持ち楽しんでいるので、英語でコミュニケーションをとることへの意欲が格段に高くなります。受験生の皆さんの中には、英米学科に入るためにひたすら勉強しようと思ってくれている人がいると思います。それも大切なことですが、一つだけ忘れないで欲しいことがあります。英語や英国、米国に興味を持ち続けて下さい。ポップ音楽でも、映画でも、疲れた時は勉強の合間に、ためらわず「楽しい英語」に親しんでください。それらが受験生の皆さんを励ましてくれますし、受験勉強と同じくらい、大学に入学してからの糧になるはずです。焦らず、自分のできることをしていって下さい。皆さんが入学してくれるのを心から楽しみにしています。

授業内容の概要

Communicative English I

Communicative English I is a year-long course aimed at helping students improve their English speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. Students develop English fluency and an understanding of pragmatic language use through course tasks and communication activities. Various writing tasks allow students to express their opinions and improve their grammatical accuracy. Students also develop their listening abilities through exposure to authentic listening materials. Introducing different reading strategies enables students to view language in use and acquire new vocabulary. Students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills through group discussions on topics that range from daily conversational themes to matters of global importance.

Grammar & Basic Writing

In Grammar & Basic Writing, students will work to understand the process of writing in English, with a focus on the sentence and paragraph levels. Grammar accuracy development through instructor and peer feedback will help students avoid common errors, as writing skills such as outlining, proofreading, and rules of common textual genres are introduced. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Have a basic understanding of the mechanics of English writing (capital letters, punctuation, sentence structures)
Identify common errors in grammar usage (articles, subject-verb agreement, tense agreement, countable/uncountable nouns, prepositions and phrasal verbs)
Understand how to use a dictionary (e.g. understanding the format of a dictionary entry)
Produce a variety of simple, compound and complex sentences within writing assignments
Understand the basic structure of a paragraph (title, line spacing and margins)
Format their own short paragraphs
Write coherent paragraphs of 150-200 words

基礎演習 I

この授業では、大学で学び、研究していくための基本的な知識や技術を身につけるために、情報の集め方、発表の仕方、レポートの書き方等を学びます。実際に図書館で文献を検索したり、プレゼンテーション、ディスカッション、レポートの作成をおこないます。
